Certificate of Higher Education in EUROPEAN LABOUR STUDIES

AIMS OF THE COURSE

This TUC-recognised course will be essential for all those who are involved in industrial relations as lay or professional practitioners. It will equip students to deal more effectively with new European Developments in the 1990s. It is intended that students will be able to participate more fully in the developing links with other European Labour movements The course will be complete in itself. However as the course level and quantity of work is equivalent to the first year of a three year full-time degree, students can apply to attend the second year of suitable full-time degrees and the equivalent stage of part-time degrees. A particularly suitable degree is the BA (Hons) in Politics with Labour Studies offered at South Bank. The TUC will be giving us sufficient resources to provide a grant of three-fifths of the fees for ten students for the year 1995/6. These students must be members of TUC-affiliated Unions and not able to gain grants from other sources.

CONTENT OF THE COURSE

The course is intended to meet the urgent needs of Trade Unionists and others involved in industrial relations, to understand an increasingly integrated Europe.

In order to develop this understanding, the first year provides an historical, political and economic background to the work of the European Labour movement. Additionally in the first year the European community and its institutions will be studied.

In the second year students will look at the relations between Capital, Labour and the State in Europe, and look closely at the work of Labour movements, looking particularly at topical issues.

One European Language can be studied and as much as possible integrated into the course. Students can start with no knowledge of the Language (Spanish for 1995/6) or basic i.e. Ordinary Level GCE or equivalent knowledge of French.

This year however, for students who do not wish to study a language, an option is to study Trade Unions Today, a Unit which studies British Trade Unions in an international context.

Students who have been away from study for a period are encouraged to attend a voluntary study skills class in the first semester. As the course has been designed for busy people and only requires attendance at the University for two evenings a week for the first year and one for the second year (or if Trade Unions Today is taken, only two evenings a week for the first semester and then only one thereafter) study skills will help the development of independent learning.

To further integrate the course it is intended (subject to demand and availability) to organise a voluntary Annual Week's Summer School in another European country. We are provisionally booked to go to Dublin in May 1996.
