Hillingdon Hospital update 30 Sep 1996

1. Thirty of the strikers were among 100 local people who attended the AGM of the Hillingdon Health Trust on Friday 27 September, accompanied by Malcolm Wing, Deputy Head of Health, who spoke and demanded that the Health Trust should put pressure on Pall Mall to reinstate the strikers. Malkiat Bilku (the strikers' steward) also spoke and put a lot of pressure on the Chief Executive of the Health Trust, who eventually closed the meeting whilst being criticised by Councillor Wally Kennedy (a leading local supporter of the strikers).

2. Twenty two of the strikers went up to Liverpool on Saturday 28 September for the Dockers' demonstration, at which Malkiat Bilku spoke.

3. Half a dozen strikers attended Labour Party Conference on Monday 30 September in order to speak at a fringe meeting on the minimum wage, organised by the Socialist Campaign Group supporters network (alongside Geoff Martin, UNISON London Region Convenor).

4. Mass pickets to mark the anniversary of the dispute on Tuesday 1 October are to take place at 7am and 12pm at Hillingdon hospital, Pield Heath Road, Uxbbridge (bus U4 from Uxbridge underground station).

5. The Hillingdon Hospital Support Group and the Campaign for a Fighting and Democratic UNISON have called for a demonstration and rally to mark the anniversary of the dispute. This will take place from noon on Saturday 5 October assembling outside Hillingdon Civic Centre, Uxbridge for a march and returning to the Civic Centre for a rally.

On the "How you can help" page it might be worth saying that requests for the strikers to speak at union meetings where donations or collections will be considered can be made by e-mail to me providing at least two weeks notice is given.
