The
Centre for Trade Union Studies at the University of North London
The Centre offers:
- Higher education courses especially designed for trade unionists
- Short courses for individual unions
- Research and consultancy for trade unions
We work closely with other staff from the University and can
draw on the unrivalled resources of the TUC
Library Collections, now based at the University.
Courses
From February 1998 we will be running the following courses:
- Certificate of Higher Education in
Labour and Trade Union Studies This part-time course is designed
to improve the effectiveness of trade unionists and increase
their knowledge and understanding of the British trade union
and labour movement. The modular course offers: Trade Unions
and the Labour Movement, British Labour History, Political Economy,
Technology and Change at Work, and Industrial Relations and Collective
Bargaining.
- Certificate of Higher Education in
European Labour Studies This part-time course is designed
to meet the needs of trade unionists to understand an increasingly
integrated Europe, vital for all actual and potential European
works councillors. The course subjects include: European Labour
History, the Political Economy of Europe, European Capital, Comparative
Industrial Relations and the European Labour Movement. In addition
a European language can be studied.
- Half-degree in Trade Union Studies
A new initiative which includes: The Historical and Economic
Context of Trade Unions, Trade Union Structure and the Legal
Framework, Political Institutions and Processes, Social Structures
and Social Processes, and Law, Economy and Society. It can be
studied full or part time, together with a half-degree in another
subject.
We are developing an MA in Trade Union
Studies, to be launched in October 1998.
Short Courses
We also provide courses for individual unions. We can assist
with writing course materials and designing, accrediting and running
courses. Recent projects include:
- developing and piloting union reps induction programmed
- designing equal opportunity materials
- running courses on equal rights
- developing accredited higher education programmes for TU's
Research and Consultancy
We offer consultancy to unions and collaborate on research
projects. We have links with other specialised researchers in
the University. Recent projects include:
- trans-European research on union approaches to new technology
- evaluation of educational programmes
- collaboration on a European project on the transition to
working life
