Certificate of Higher Education in Labour and Trade Union Studies (CHELTUS)

Two years part-time evening

About CHELTUS

This 2 year part-time evening course is for active trade unionists who, having completed shop steward or safety representative training, want to learn more about the labour movement. The course is designed for adult post-experience students and will build on existing knowledge and experience. It will provide an opportunity to acquire a more thorough understanding of the historical, economic, international and contemporary context of the British trade union and labour movement.

The course is complete in itself. However, its level is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree thus enabling those who pass it, if they wish, to proceed directly to the second year of a suitable degree course, e.g. BA in Labour Studies.

Why Study at the University of North London

The University is particularly well placed to offer an invaluable service to trade unionists in a supportive academic environment. It has its own Centre for Trade Union Studies (recently transferred from South Bank University). The Centre has been in existence for 15 years and has a high reputation for its educational and research work. In addition the University has at its disposal the unrivalled resource of the TUC Library Collection, now permanently located on the main Holloway Road site.

The Curriculum

The course is structured into 6 taught modules and a
project.
