Certificate of Higher Education in European Labour Studies (CHEELS)

Two years part-time evening

About CHEELS

The aim of this course is to meet the growing need of lay trade unionists, European works councillors, trade union employees and others involved in Industrial Relations and Politics to understand an increasingly integrated Europe and its Labour movements.

Graduates and non-graduates are both welcome. Its level is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree. Successful completion offers the opportunity to proceed directly to the second year of an appropriate degree course.

Why Study at the University of North London

The University is particularly well placed to offer an invaluable service to trade unionists in a supportive academic environment. It has its own Centre for Trade Union Studies (recently transferred from South Bank University). The Centre has been in existence for 15 years and has a high reputation for its educational and research work. In addition the University has at its disposal the unrivalled resource of the TUC Library Collection, now permanently located on the main Holloway Road site.

Course Content

Year I

Year 2

Study skills are integral to the course.

We endeavour to hold a voluntary summer school every year in another European country, hosted by a Union or University.

After the course

This course has helped students to gain jobs and promotion in trade unions, although clearly vacancies are scarce and much sought after. It will enable lay-activists to be better informed and more effective at their place of work and in their trade union.

Entry Requirements

Our entry requirements are designed to be flexible enough to allow adult students with sufficient interest and motivation to be accepted, provided the Course Director is satisfied that applicants understand and can tackle the requirements of a course of this type.

Every applicant will be interviewed.

Applications are positively encouraged from all labour movement activists and especially from women and from Afro-Caribbeans, Asians and other ethnic groups

Recognised academic qualifications are:

Assessment

Assessment for all Units, except the language, is based upon course work.

Teaching methods

Teaching methods include a mixture of short lectures, organised but lively discussion, and practical assignments, some simulating union work, which are intended to allow students to solve realistic problems.

Financial assistance

All students should apply to their employer and to their union for financial assistance to pay fees.

Times and days

Two year evening course Monday and Wednesday; two evenings per week first three semesters, one evening for last semester, 18.00- 21.00
